Our History
The Darne Bloomers Garden Club came into existence on September 23, 1988. The name was chosen to capture the friendly, fun-loving spirit of the Club. Membership in the National Capital Area Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. required that we exist for one year, have at least one officer, and have sponsorship by two Garden Clubs. For membership in this national organization, we were also required to submit a list of members with a check for dues to the National Capital Area Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. The Seedling Garden Club of Clarksville and the Homesteaders Garden Club of Chevy Chase agreed to sponsor our membership in the Federation.Initially, we met in the basement of the Darnestown Presbyterian Church and therefore had to limit the desired club size to 25 “active” members and dues were $15 for the year. The first project was “Flower Arrangements Done in Antique Containers”. The Club has now grown to a maximum of 45 active members and its members have provided nearly 200 monthly programs covering many aspects of updated horticultural and conservation practices, floral design, and community/regional resources to explore our love of gardening. Meeting formats include lectures, demonstrations, field trips to local and regional resources, “Hands-on” projects where members have the opportunity to create floral arrangements and other related gardening projects in a group setting, often led by noted design professionals, and an annual year-end May luncheon. We have had members offer to open their homes to other members for holiday house tours and spring garden tours as well.
